ODE TO THE COLOR PINK
by Audrey Xavier
Ode to the color pink
So
sweet, so tasteful
Like
strawberries
So much joy, the color pink
Red crosses over white.
I can wear it, eat it, or sleep on it.
It's soft, graceful as a ballerina
Dancing to my heart.
To fuchsia, to baby, to soft, to hot.
Extravagant.
Praise. Pink! We have heard on high.

ODE TO MY BEAUTY
MARKS
by Jenelyn Santos
Every morning I wake up
and I see you
patiently waiting
for me to greet you,
You make me look like a
chocolate chip cookie.
You're like round brown gems
all over me.
Even when people criticize you
and call you hairy moles
I don't care because
to my eyes you're appealing.
You were even on
famous Hollywood faces,
and now I have the privilege
to have you by my side.
That's why I praise
you, beauty marks,
my beautiful lunares.

AN ODE TO MUSIC
by Vilma Rojas
The spirit of the world.
What makes your body breathe, move, exist...live?
It is the sadness and anger in the little girl
whose grandmother just died.
It is the happiness shown on a baby's face
when it sees its mom.
It is found everywhere from the streets,
where the next Eminem falls in love
with rap when he hears cars
blarin' Biggie and Tupac,
to the music studio where 50 Cent, Kanye
West, and Jay-z, all heard their #1 hits,
and even to the peaceful, rhythmic beating of the heart.
Maybe you just broke up with your partner
or lost someone close.
Maybe you're celebrating a birthday or wedding.
Maybe it is Christmas and the family is gathered
while carolers stand outside with their melodies
while diamonds fall from the heavens.
Music is there through the good and bad times
and you will never have to fight with it.
It is the sprit of the world.

ODE TO MY BASKETBALL SNEAKERS
by David Ruiz
For my 12th virthday
I received new basketball sneakers
Dark as the night
Comfortable as pillows.
The bodies of two identical race cars
And that fast,
Laces like bungee cords.
I couldn't resist
I put them on and felt
As if I had just gone on vacation,
Relaxed, clothed for a big leap.

ODE TO LATIN FLAVOR
by Felicita Peña
It's tangy, fruity,
Hot!
Tangier than a tangerine,
It's hot molten lava!
Cheers, laughter,
So full of life!
It's merengue, bachata,
And Celia Cruz!
Carne asada, pupusas,
Carnivals, fiestas!
Guitars and trumpets
Are filling the air,
the beat is taking your body captive.
Colorful tops, so
Mesmerizing.
Greens, blues
Red!
Confetti in your hair,
Fireworks going off everywhere!
Once you get a taste of this
Spicy treat, you'll ask for more!
Ya' know what they say:
Once ya' go Latin,
Ya' can't go backin'!

ODE TO MY WINDOW
by Beatrice Rios
At morning time I hate it,
It brings in light....
It yells, "Wake up!!!"
When I come home,
I adore it!!!
I look out my window
with paneless thoughts
and look up at the stars.
As they look back at me
with their sparkling eyes.
I know they'll never hurt my feelings,
although they are always there
when I am down and depressed.
My window looks forward to the dawn of the morning
to start a new beautiful day.

AN ODE TO MY LIP GLOSS
by Neilly Phan
Sitcky like honey,
And glossy like glaze,
Cool relief to my lips,
Yet you leave me thirsty for more.
The scent you provide is no ordinary one,
But many different selections of wonder.
Like the Greek Goddess Athena
You leave me mesmerized.

ODE TO MY SPEEDO
by Michael Ramos
Tighter than the skin on my back,
I fear that if I move, the tightness
of the speedo will cut off the circulation
of my battery pack.
My legs wobble like an amateur on stilts.
Yet, it is not an ordinary speedo.
It has more holes that the ozone layer.
It makes my bum look like a globe.
It has two hemispheres and a clearly
visible equator.

ODE TO THE
FRENCH FRY
by Xiomara Umana
Long, skinny, soft, and salty.
It does not matter because they're tasty.
they make you feel there's gold in your mouth.
The inside, white like snow that has not been touched,
covered with a gold shell on the outside.
The texture, soft as the pillow you sleep on at night.
When they are extremely hot, you do get a tongue burn,
but in the end, it's worth it.
The salt makes the taste even richer,
like the inside of your mouth is having a party.
Coming down to the last bite
makes you wish it was infinite.
The best thing in the world, a person's best friend,
better than money or diamonds.
Thank god for his creation of the french fry.

ODE TO MY JEANS
by Katherin Tejada
Anglea Andrews bought me
a pair of jeans
with her own pocket money
that she worked hard for.
A pair of jeans as classic as million dollar pearls.
I put on my jeans
as quick as I could. A perfect fit.
It felt as if the jeans were made for me.
The jeans were made of cotton.
It felt as if I were sitting on a cloud.
I got hooked to the jeans
and did not want to take them off.
I thanked Angela for the jeans
and she saw that I was really happy.
My smile looked like it was painted on.
Even though a clown's smile isn't real,
my feelings and my smile were.
The point of my ode is this: even the most
simplest pair of jeans as mine could be as greatly
appreciated as anything else.

ODE TO SPORTS FANS
by Emir Skokic
This is an ode for sports fans everywhere
That worship teams that never succeed.
This is a poem that gives praise to those
That stay up all night
Only to watch their dreams leave the park
With one swing of the bat.
This is a verse that sympathizes with those
That stare in disbelief
As against all odds
A spiteful ball is ripped from the air by malevolent hands,
Only to send those loyal fans
Into the abyss once more.
This is a tribute to the people that hide behind
Masks of happiness and uncaring
When anguish burns within them.
But above all, this is a song that echoes
Above the celebrating fireworks
That mock those who suffer,
Beyond the tears
Dripping down a thwarted face,
And forever
In the heart of every Cubs,
Panthers,
White Sox,
And Mavericks fan
that dared believe
Victory might, just once,
Knock on their door.
